Filming:
Roles:Yesterday the 25/03/2014 Tom, Connor, Viknesh and myself met to have a session of filming to gather all the required scenes needed for our editing. Connor had brought an Actor friend along to help us, Scott. Scott would be playing the main character in the film ( Dom). As for the other characters for our film, I played the police officer and Connor played the drug dealer.
When I wasn't acting my role was to monitor the sound and to direct the scene giving the go for the actors and reminding them of their dialogue and mood needed for the scene. Tom was in charge of filming every scene of the film, Connor worked on acting the drug dealer however Viknesh did not seem to collaborate much to the task since all he did was carry the equipment.
Tom had also printed everyone the script he made and I edited. This helped us understand our acting roles and allowed us to film each scene needed for our project.
Filming Scenes:
At first we went over the film and the scenes with Scott to introduce him to each part of our film to be able to play his character. We had decided to film according to the location that we were at , so it wasn't necessarily in the chronological order of our film. We wanted to repeat each scene as many times as we considered necessary and we wanted to try different angles so we have a wide range to choose from in the editing stage.
We started off in the Elliot building dorm, here we recorded scenes such as Dom waking up, walking out and overdosed on drugs. For the first scene (waking up and walking out) we had to get prepared with all the equipment, my role was to ensure the sound was working fine and was clear. I hooked the microphone to Scott since he was our main actor and al sound will revolve around him, I managed to remove all background static for a great sound. Once we were set up we started recording, for this scene we included close up shots and full body shots to record emotion and to display our main character. For the phone call we zoomed in on the phone to make it obvious that he was getting called. For the call itself Connor was talking in the background to play the role of the doctor, making it look like a call whilst we could here what's being said to our protagonist Dom. Whilst we were there we also included the end scene of him laying in his bed overdosed with drugs, this end scene will make the whole film look like it was a Drug hallucination and will give way for us to apply the educational text telling the viewer that drugs are bad. Overall in the scene my role was to ensure a quality sound and to direct the scene.
We then moved just outside the Elliot building where we made recordings of Dom walking over the bridge and past the shop, these will be the scenes of him being depressed and walking to his suicide point ( through a busy location) , furthermore we also recorded the drug transaction scene and him running from the dealer. This was done under Elliot bridge. Here, my main focus was once again on ensuring good quality sound and directing the scene. Since it was a noisy location due to lots of people I was always making sure that you could clearly hear the protagonist. I found that in the scene walking by the shop that there was construction noise of someone drilling nearby, this couldn't be avoided however I shall be removing the background noise here and include sound files such as the background music. Just like the previous scene many different angle shots were recorded, some where extreme full shots to capture our protagonist walking through the crowd, others were over shoulder views from one actor to the other. We wanted the Conversation from actor to actor to appear fluid so each time one of the two talked we focused on that actor.
Lastly we walked towards the woods/ pond for our suicide scene and the scene where our protagonist meets with a Time police which was played by myself. My role was to alert Dom about his new surroundings and how he had teleported to a not so good future, but I hand him a newspaper which he later reads to find out about the drug dealer who may have a cure to his problems.
For the suicide scene I was back in charge of directing and sound assessment. We had Dom appear he was just about to jump I n the water. I will be in charge of editing this part and transitioning it to a black screen where you here the water splash.
End session/ what to do from here:
Overall this session was really successful , we had spent 4 hours filming and have recorded all the necessary scenes for a rough cut since accessibility to the cameras may be harder as weeks progress.
We have saved all the files onto drop box so that we all have access to them for editing. We have agreed to work on editing a full raw cut of our film this Thursday and refine the edit next week.
Any further recordings which we may find we need after making our rough cut will be done next week, however for now it seems we have all the required filming.
I shall be finding all necessary audio for our clips and background music for our editing process.
I will use https://www.freesound.org/browse/tags/sound-effects/ for some downloadable sound effects such as the splashing of the water and phone ringing. I use this page since I have listened to several clips and they are believable and come out clear however not too many edited sounds will be included since we want it to appear realistic. Any additional sounds will be made by me.
